At the Detroit Prospect Challenge Tournament yesterday, the Penguins lost their final game, 3-1 to the Dallas Stars. The Pens’ goal was scored by this year’s top draft choice, Liam Ruck, off an assist by his twin brother, second-round choice Markus Ruck.
Training camp begins at 8:45 tomorrow morning in Cranberry.
The Penguins yesterday sent seven young prospects back to their junior hockey teams to get ready for their season. Included among them were some highly-regarded players, including 2025 second round draft choice Peyton Kettles (Kelowna Rockets, WHL), a 6-foot-5-inch defenseman who missed almost all of last season after having shoulder surgery. Also sent to back to juniors was defenseman Bennett Kelly (Prince Albert Raiders, WHL), forward Travis Hayes, (Soo Greyhounds, OHL) a 2025 fourth round choice who is the brother of highly-ranked Penguins prospect Avery Hayes. Forward Pierce Mbuyi (Owen Sound Attack, OHL), a third round choice this year, was returned to juniors, along with ’25 fifth round choice Jordan Charron, a forward (Soo Greyhounds, OHL), and goaltenders Carter Casey ((Medicine Hat Tigers, WHL) and Xavier Wendt (Tri-City Americans, WHL).
One of the Penguins’ top young prospects is center Will Horcoff, a 6-foot-5-inch center who will play a second season for the University of Michigan this year. Horcoff’s dad, 15-year NHL veteran Shawn Horcoff, yesterday was named interim general manager of the Detroit Red Wings, replacing Red Wings legend Steve Yzerman, who moves into an advisory role with the team.
