Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday says he hopes Thursday’s re-conviction of Ronald Weiss for the 1978 murder of Barbara Bruzda will provide a measure of relief for the teenager’s family and friends, whom he says “have dealt with heartbreak and the anguish of not knowing if their loved one’s killer would be held responsible.”
Sunday referred to Weiss as a “cold-blooded killer,” and said the fatal beating of the 16-year-old with a tire iron was “horrific.”
Weiss will be sentenced on October 30th. The case, though, might not be over. Weiss can appeal to a higher court in Pennsylvania or even in U.S. District Court on a contention that the trial was not permitted because his 1997 conviction for the same crime was overturned in the federal court in 2018.
Indiana County President Judge Thomas Bianco ruled that Weiss could be re-tried because the reason federal judge Mark Hornack struck down the original conviction, prosecutorial misconduct, was separate from the actual crime Weiss committed.
