Pennsylvania’s Attorney General announced that the multi-state coalition that the commonwealth is a part of has reached a settlement agreement with the parent company of Facebook.
The settlement involves up to $17.1 billion in national remediation payments by Meta. The total is contingent on other major social media companies agreeing to changes to company policies that are meant to protect children. Those changes include setting time limits for platform use for minors, cutting kids access to harmful content and other sweeping changes to existing age assurance framework. Pennsylvania will receive at least $516 million over a period of years and that could go up to $729 million.
Attorney General Dave Sunday said that the days of ignoring the damage social media platforms are causing kids is over and called the agreement “a landmark settlement that brings transformative changes to these hugely-popular social media spaces.”
