Tuesday night, the River Valley School Board approved drafting a letter to the Pennsylvania Department of Education concerning a forensic audit.
The request was made at the end of the meeting after members of the public read emails that were acquired through right-to-know requests that involved Trisha Martel, the wife of former Superintendent Phillip Martel. The emails showed that she was reportedly involved in many aspects of district life ranging from holiday gifts to personnel to student data. The emails prompted board member Glenn Richards to make the request. It was approved almost unanimously, with Anthony Conzano being the only one voting against it.
Former board member Jessica Clawson was one of those in attendance reading the emails. She said that getting the Department of Education involved was a step in the right direction.
Board President Rick Harper said he was shocked to find out how involved Trisha Martel was in the district’s operations.
Martel officially retired from the school district at the end of June.
The board also acknowledged the first reading of several policies, including a policy on the use of district credit cards, where the board would be given copies of the card’s statements.
