With just over three weeks away from the scheduled first day of jury selection for the Ronald Weiss murder retrial, there have been a couple of court filings, one from the defense and a response from the prosecution, in the last week.
Weiss, who recently turned 78 years old, is being tried for the 1978 murder of 16-year-old Barbara Bruzda of Tunnelton. He was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison but a federal judge in 2018 overturned the verdict on the grounds of prosecutorial misconduct.
On Friday, the 24th of July, Weiss’s attorney Taylor Malcolm Johnson filed a brief regarding motions on evidence the defense would like to exclude at trial. This past Friday, Senior Deputy Attorney General Kara Marie Rice filed the commonwealth’s response. The two sides have been contesting the inclusion of the evidence, which in general involves the transcripts of the original trial in 1997.
Jury selection for the new trial is scheduled for August 24th.
