The Department of Environmental Protection has reopened a public comment period for the Homer City Redevelopment natural gas power plant, following revisions to the plant’s original June 27th draft of a wastewater permit. The changes correct some errors in previous documents, but do not alter the effluent limits and monitoring requirement for the discharge of cooling tower blowdown and discharge into Two Lick Creek. Blacklick Creek was listed in the original application.
The 30-day notice resets the comment period, ending it on August 10th rather than tomorrow’s date, July 27th.
Blowdown is the removal of water that contains minerals and salts left behind after pure water evaporates from a cooling tower into the atmosphere. The discharge is heavily regulated to avoid polluting the stream into which discharges are made.
According to DEP, the new permit application “is not expected to affect public water supplies.” The blowdown would discharge of maximum of 6.84 million gallons per day.
