Thomas Francis Kennedy, 76, of Indiana passed away Tuesday June 23, 2026 at IRMC. The son of Richard John and Margaret Florence (Moorhead) Kennedy, he was born October 16, 1949, in Indiana.
A graduate of Indiana High School, he attended IUP.
At a young age Tom developed a passion for baseball; from the Waxler’s Little League team, to Ward League and on to the Indiana County League first as a player and eventually as a coach. While at IUP he became a volunteer coach under his mentor Arch Moore and continued in that role for 17 years until he was named Head Coach in 1997. He held the position until 2005. He was elected to the Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
More recently, worked in the purchasing department at Diamond Pharmacy Services until his retirement.
‘Coach’ was a member of the Homer City American Legion Post 493 and the Allied Club of Indiana.
He is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Kennedy (James Iman) of Pittsburgh , a son Casey Sean Kennedy of Pittsburgh; brother Joseph (Janice) Kennedy of Indiana and a sister Christine Kennedy of Morgantown, WV.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother John.
The family would like to thank the staff of IRMC, Indian Haven and Rose Haven for their care during his recent illness.
A scholarship to support the IUP Baseball program in his memory is being created, contributions can be made to the Foundation for IUP, 1011 South Drive Indiana, PA 15701. Include ‘Coach Bird Baseball Scholarship’ in the memo.
Interment will be at St Bernard’s Cemetery, where a graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 25th at 1pm with Father Richard N. Owens, OFM Cap, a gathering will follow.
