Five fire companies were dispatched yesterday for a reported structure fire at a home in Rayne Township, but it was a dryer fire that did not extend into the home. Firefighters from Indiana, Clymer, Marion Center, Commodore, the Hope Fire Company out of Cambria County, and Team 900 were summoned shortly after four o’clock.
According to an Indiana Fire Association Facebook post, the dryer started smoking due to a wire that had rubbed through its rubber coating over time and arced against the metal top of the appliance, melting the wiring, burning the insulation, and destroying the electric connection.
Firefighters credited the smoke alarm for alerting the family and an exhaust fan and commercial-grade kitchen hood for ventilating the home before they arrived.
