The official word from the Pirates on Konnor Griffin’s hand injury was not good. The 20-year-old shortstop was initially reported to be out about four weeks in media reports, but senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk later said it would be much longer. Griffin has a torn sagittal band, a tendon on the knuckle of his left ring finger.
Tomczyk’s explained the timeline for Griffin’s return.
The injury was suffered when Griffin dove for a ground ball on Sunday in Washington.
Jared Triolo will become the primary shortstop and Jack Brannigan was called up from Indianapolis to be the backup.
The Pirates also reported yesterday that outfielder Oneil Cruz began swinging a bat yesterday as he works on returning from two broken bones in his left hand, and first baseman Spencer Horwitz began his running progression in his recovery from a strained hamstring. Pitcher Wilbur Dotel threw two scoreless one-hit innings of relief in a rehab appearance for Altoona last night.
