Indiana Borough Manager Nicole Sipos told Indiana In the Morning on WCCS last week that “we need to be aware that traffic patterns are going to be changing,” starting on Wednesday with the implementation of the “4-Way Steady Red Pedestrian Phase” traffic light program, which will halt the flow of traffic at intersections on Philadelphia Street in all four directions so that pedestrians may cross safely. That includes no “right-on-red” turns on Philadelphia Street.
Sipos says the motoring public and pedestrians need to be alert, and there will be special efforts by police and others to educate the public traveling Philadelphia Street from 4th through 9th streets.
Sipos says other changes may come in the future based on further study of side streets and the effectiveness of the new traffic procedures.
Sipos also previewed the borough’s summer paving program, which will begin in July and include the reconstruction of Burns Avenue between Seventh and Eighth streets, where the brick portions of the road will be removed and replaced by asphalt. Milling and paving will be in the area of the Indiana Junior High School, including the “avenues” in the neighborhood. She said borough work crews will be repairing storm boxes in advance of the actual start of the paving program.
