Indiana Borough has announced preparations to implement changes to the traffic signals along the Philadelphia Street corridor.
Work is expected to begin next Tuesday, with the goal of having the new patterns in operation on July 2nd as part of the borough’s Four-Way-Red Initiative. The program represents a broader commitment to creating a safer environment for pedestrians and motorists alike. The new patterns will implement a four-way red light pattern on Philadelphia Street between 4th and 9th streets to make sure there are no cars in motion when pedestrians cross the street. This will also include the unveiling of the “No Turn on Red” signs. The changes came after two incidents where pedestrians were killed in the crosswalk in 2025.
In a news release, police chief Justin Schawl said that while the efforts are primarily focused on Philadelphia Street, his officers are “committed to making sure all areas of town are safe. Motorists and pedestrians in all areas of town should always remain patient, pay attention, and follow rules for safe travel.” Borough officials also advise people to be patient with the traffic changes as there will be a period of adjustment. Residents are encouraged to stay alert, follow posted signals and signage, and allow additional time while becoming familiar with the new traffic patterns.
