The YMCA of Indiana County reported a lifeguard rescue of a swimmer at Mack Park Pool this afternoon.
Officials said the incident happened at 1:05 Tuesday afternoon when lifeguard Alex Gillham went into the water to perform a shallow water rescue of a young swimmer. The lifeguard brought the swimmer to safety and immediately started lifesaving measures. The swimmer, who was not identified in the report, was revived by the time EMS personnel arrived. They took over and the young swimmer was taken to Children’s Hospital by medical helicopter for further evaluation and treatment.
The Y said that they were “incredibly proud of the swift response, professionalism and dedication demonstrated by our lifeguards and staff during this critical incident.” They also thanked EMT’s fire, law enforcement and medical personnel for their assistance and the coordinated efforts of everyone involved.

“Today at approximately 1:05 p.m., a lifeguard at Mack Park Pool entered the water to perform a shallow water rescue of a young swimmer in distress. The lifeguard quickly brought the swimmer to safety and immediately initiated lifesaving measures. Through the prompt actions and training of our lifeguards and staff, the swimmer was successfully revived and was alert and awake when emergency medical services arrived on scene.
“EMS personnel assumed care and the youth was transported by air ambulance to Children’s Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
“We are incredibly proud of the swift response, professionalism, and dedication demonstrated by our lifeguards and staff during this critical incident. Their actions reflect the importance of ongoing training and preparedness in ensuring the safety of our patrons.
“We also extend our gratitude to EMS, fire, law enforcement, and medical personnel for their assistance and continued care.
“Out of respect for the swimmer and their family, we will not be releasing any additional personal information at this time. Our thoughts are with the child, their family, and all those affected by this incident.
“The safety of our patrons remains our highest priority, and we are grateful for the coordinated efforts of everyone involved in this emergency response.”
