Catcher Derek Berg’s double drove in two runs in the tenth inning and Altoona’s bullpen dominated the Akron RubberDucks in a 3-1 Curve win on Saturday night.
In a bullpen game, Brandon Neeck, Allesandro Ercolani, Jaycob Deese, and Landon Tomkins covered the game for the Curve, with Deese and Tomkins retiring the final fourteen batters in a row to send the game to the tenth. After allowing a leadoff single in the tenth, Tomkins struck out the next two batters, then with runners on first and third, Jack Brannigan cut off the throw on an attempted steal at second base, threw back to Berg at home, and he then nailed Juan Benjamin trying to get back to the bag, ending the game.
Altoona pitchers combined for sixteen strikeouts in the game, a career-high seven by Tomkins.
The Curve had only five hits on the night, two of them by Berg. Akron had only five hits.
Peyton Stumbo pitches for the Curve this afternoon in the series finale, which will also mark the end of the Eastern League’s first half. Record will be wiped clean to start the second half of the season, with the Curve returning home to play Reading starting on Tuesday night.
