A former Pittsburgh Penguin is returning to the team, this time as a member of the front office.
The team this morning has named Ron Francis as special advisor for hockey operations. Francis has spent the last seven seasons with the Seattle Kracken, first as the team’s original General Manager, and then was promoted to team president in 2025. He also spent 12 years in management with the Carolina Hurricanes before that with roles ranging from Executive Vice President and General Manager to Director of Player Development. Francis’ 23-year playing career started with the Hartford Whalers before he was traded to the Pens in 1991 to help them win the franchise’s first two Stanley Cups. He also played for the Hurricanes and then one final season with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2004.
The Pens Hall of Famer will assist the Penguins’ hockey operations leadership group with strategic planning, roster construction and optimization of all internal systems and processes to help further implement best practices within the organization.
