Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday has announced he authorized a settlement agreement that allows contractors to be paid for security upgrades to Governor Shapiro’s private home in Montgomery County.
That home received over $1 million to improve security efforts after an arson attack last year at the state-owned Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg. The upgrades include a new security system worth over $300,000, and another $290,000 for landscaping and other groundskeeping. The recommendations came from State Police and they sought to pay for the upgrades with taxpayer money along with $30 million in upgrades at the Governor’s Residence. Treasurer Stacy Garrity, who is running against Shapiro for the Governor’s seat, refused to approve the payments, stating there was no legal authority to do so.
Sunday released a memo on Friday saying he agreed with Garrity’s concerns stating that the state could lawfully pay the contractors only through a legislative appropriation or a settlement agreement to avoid litigation. Sunday announced he authorized the settlement as the situation was a unique one as the contractors performed the work in good faith.
