A bill concerning state playoffs for boundary and non-boundary schools has passed the state house and is now in the Senate.
House Bill 41 would authorize the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association to create separate playoff systems for public and private/charter schools. The aim is to create a fairer competitive environment between traditional school districts that are limited to drawing student-athletes from within specific geographic boundaries and private and charter schools that can draw students from anywhere. The bill would not mandate the change, but would give the PIAA the authorization to make it.
State Representative Scott Conklin from Centre County introduced the bill and said that the current system forces unfair competitions “that leave public school students on a dangerously unlevel playing field, subjecting them to added physical risks and even depriving them of scholarship and recruitment opportunities.”
The bill passed by a 178-23 vote. Both State Representatives Jim Struzzi and Brian Smith approved the bill.
