Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson has introduced a bill that will create a grant program for K-12 schools to acquire and install milk dispensers or cold storage equipment for use in school cafeterias.
The Funding Refrigeration Equipment for Student Health, or FRESH Act, would establish a $4 million competitive grant program, with a 75% federal cost share, that will help schools invest in milk dispensers so that students will have a ready supply throughout the school year.
The bill was co-sponsored by Congressman Joe Courtney of Connecticut, and carries the support of the Grassroots Pennsylvania Dairy Advisory Committee, the PA Farm Bureau, and the National Milk Producers Federation among other groups.
This comes on the heels of a bill from Thompson that allows schools to offer regular or flavored whole and 2% milk options.
