The Steelers made big news on the first day of mandatory minicamp, signing edge rusher Nick Herbig to a four-year, $100 million contract extension. The deal was announced a few hours after the first workout of the camp, which Herbig watched from the sidelines.
Prior to the announcement of his contract extension, Nick Herbig said he wants to be a Steelers for life, and he is willing to do anything the team wants him to do to help them win.
The Steelers also signed veteran safety Darnell Savage Jr., a 2019 Packers first round draft choice who has also played for Jacksonville, Washington, and Buffalo.
Five other players tried out with the Steelers yesterday, including former Packers tight end Robert Tonyan, an eight-year veteran who once caught three touchdown passes from Aaron Rodgers with the Packers. They also worked out wide receiver Trayvon Rudolph, linebackers Amari Burney and Jamin Davis, and punter James Platte.
On the first day of minicamp, the team had NFL officials on the field with them, and in some team meetings as well. Coach Mike McCarthy said it was a valuable experience for everyone.
Day Two of the minicamp is today. It will be the final workout before the team heads off-campus for the final day tomorrow. The final four OTAs of the off-season will be held next Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
