At the end of the week, a new state law will go into effect that bans the use of hand-held cell phones while driving.
Effective June 5th, “Paul Miller’s Law” will prohibit the use of cell phones while behind the wheel, even if stopped at a red light or in traffic. On that day, law enforcement officers will start issuing written warnings for violators, with full citations being issued starting June 6th of next year. The law does have exceptions for those using their phones to alert first-responders, those using hands-free technology to make phone calls, using the phone as a GPS or as a music player.
The law is named for Paul Miller, Jr., who was tragically killed in a crash with a tractor trailer in 2010 in Monroe County, as the result of a distracted driver who reached for their phone while driving.
