Another procession has been planned for an Indiana County soldier killed in World War II and being laid to rest today.
Last Friday, hundreds lined the streets in downtown Indiana to pay tribute to Pfc. John Walko of Commodore, who was killed in Germany in 1944. While his remains were recovered, they were unable to identify him. Using DNA and Forensic evidence, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced last year that Walko’s remains were identified and on May 15th, he was brought back to Indiana County for the funeral service.
Visitation was held yesterday for Walko, and a funeral service is scheduled for today at 10:00 AM at Christ Our Savior Orthodox Church. Between 11:15 and 11:45, he will be taken to Okaland Cemetery for the burial with full military honors. The public is being asked to line Philadelphia Street between 4th and 9th streets to pay tribute to him once more.
