Paul Skenes was masterful again last night for the Pirates, who topped the Rockies in the first game of their three-game series.
Greg Brown has the recap.
Skenes is on a historic run on the mound after he won his sixth game and lowered his ERA to 1.98. Manager Donnie Kelly says Skenes is the same every day, win or lose.
It will certainly be overshadowed by the performance of Skenes, but Kelly says Oneil Cruz had a tremendous night.
Skenes says he knew he was gassed in the eight inning, and he joked with Kelly that he should have gone out after seven.
Game two of the series is tonight. Mitch Keller (4-1, 2.87 ERA) makes his ninth start of the season for the Pirates against former Bucco Jose Quintana (1-2, 3.90 ERA). Airtime is 6:15, with the first pitch at 6:40 on WCCS.
The Pirates swung some roster moves yesterday, placing catcher Joey Bart on the ten-day injured list with a foot infection and recalling Endy Rodriguez from Indianapolis. They also returned reliever Cam Sanders to Indy and called up reliever Brandan Bidois, the Australian who last year was the franchise’s Kent Tekulve Reliever of the Year but has struggled to a 7.20 ERA this year.
Speaking of Indianapolis, what a return from injury rehab for Jhostynxon Garcia! He went 5-for-5 with three home runs in a 10-8 win over Louisville.
