The Pirates let one slip away in San Francisco yesterday as the bullpen failed to hold a two-run lead in extra innings.
Joe Block has the story.
The Pirates were two-for-fifteen with runners in scoring position and stranded the bases loaded in the top of the twelfth. Manager Donnie Kelly says unlike Saturday’s 13-3 win, they couldn’t get the key hit yesterday.
The Pirates went 3-3 on their six-game western swing. Outfielder Ryan O’Hearn says it wasn’t a bad trip.
Starter Bubba Chandler threw five innings and gave up two runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. He would have liked to have lasted longer.
The Pirates come home to face the Rockies for the first of three games tomorrow night. They will throw Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, and Carmen Mlodzinski in the series before hosting the Phillies over the weekend.
On Pirates Insider on WCCS yesterday, general manager Ben Cherington said pitcher Jared Jones will “toggle back and forth” between Altoona and Indianapolis in his rehab appearances, and will start for the Curve tomorrow night against Harrisburg. He says it’s not out of the question for Jones to pitch for the Pirates this month.
Jones is eligible to come off the 60-day injured list on May 26th.
The Pirates have promoted last year’s number one draft pick, pitcher Seth Hernandez, to High-A Greensburg after he dominated for Low-A Bradenton to start his first year of pro ball.
Hernandez is rated as the Pirates’ number two prospect behind Konnor Griffin and is ranked number nineteen in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. At Bradenton, he was 3-0 and gave up three earned runs in six starts for a 0.96 ERA, striking out fifty batters and walking only seven in 28 innings. In his last outing on Friday, he threw six scoreless and struck out nine against Dunedin.
