Lawmakers in Pennsylvania are continuing to debate a potential suspension of the state’s gas tax, one of the highest in the nation, as fuel prices climb.
Competing proposals in the General Assembly would temporarily eliminate the tax — with a 60-day plan and a separate House measure lasting up to six months — saving drivers roughly 57 cents per gallon on gasoline and 75 cents on diesel. Supporters argue the move would provide short-term relief to struggling families, while critics warn it could undermine funding for state police and road projects unless alternative revenue is identified.
Whether it can advance out of committee for a full vote is up in the air.
