The State House yesterday passed the bill that would allow the PIAA to institute separate championship for public and private schools. While not requiring the change, the bill permits it. The vote was overwhelming…178-23, with both representatives Jim Struzzi and Brian Smith voting for it.
The bill requires the PIAA’s Executive Board and the legislature’s Athletic Oversight Committee to hold public meetings in each PIAA district to gather public testimony and comments. Then the PIAA Executive Board must hold another meeting to discuss the fiscal impact and relevant testimony before deliberating and voting on changing the playoff format for all sports, certain sports or no sports.
State representative Jim Struzzi said that he was happy to see the bill advance, as there have been a lot of schools that have advanced in the playoffs only to be beaten by private schools.
House Bill 41 moves on to the Senate for consideration.
