Capacity is now doubled at the juvenile detention center in Westmoreland County.
Executive Director Rich Gordon says the Hempfield Township facility is up to 16 beds. The center was originally built in 1979 to house up to 24 juvenile inmates, but capacity was reduced following renovations in 2012 and failed inspections in 2023.
Westmoreland is one of only three counties to operate a juvenile detention center in Western Pennsylvania.
