The Pirates almost broke through against the Rangers last night, but a great defensive play shut down a Bucs rally and they dropped the first game of their series in Texas.
Joe Block has the story.
Nick Gonzalez and Jake Mangum each had two hits for the Pirates. Manager Donnie Kelly says the offense came up just short, and the catch by the Rangers’ Evan Carter was a key part of it.
Andrew McCutchen did not play for the Rangers.
Game two of the series is tonight. The Pirates will send right-hander Braxton Ashcraft [1-1, 2.38 ERA] to the mound against Rangers righty Jack Leiter [1-1, 4.87 ERA]. Airtime on WCCS is 7:40, with the first pitch at 8:05.
ALTOONA
Altoona lost at Harrisburg last night, 5-4. Titus Dimitru had two hits with a homer for the Curve and Will Taylor, starting in centerfield after Mitch Jebb was promoted to Indianapolis earlier in the day, also hit a home run. Peyton Stumbo pitches for the Curve tonight.
