Seargent Jeff Hoag and Patrolman Andrew Koszarek were formally recognized Tuesday night at the monthly Indiana Borough Public Safety Committee meeting with the Police Star medal. Also recognized by Indiana Borough Police were three IUP Police officers who assisted in the incident. On January 21st, the five were called out for an incident in the 1100 block of Oak Street for a man who broke into the home. Police heard a woman screaming inside. The officers broke the door down and found the suspect, Detroien Hobbs of Baltimore, and the 28-year-old female victim who had stab wounds. The officers were able to use life-saving measures with the victim while Hobbs was taken into custody. Hobbs is in Indiana County Jail as bail was denied, and a criminal call hearing is set for May 1st.
Police also commended the families of Sgt. Hoag and Patrolman Koszarek who “sacrifice and accept the ever-present danger of our profession” according to a statement from Chief Justin Schawl.
