The Pirates’ enjoyed an offensive explosion last night as they opened their seven-game homestand by crushing the Nationals.
Joe Block has the story.
Manager Donnie Kelly enjoyed watching the bats go to work.
Kelly says Skenes was rolling.
Skenes threw 88 pitches in his six innings of work, 60 of them for strikes, and he retired the final ten batters he faced. He says his changeup kept Nationals batters off-balance.
Newly-recalled reliever Evan Sisk tossed the final two innings, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out three. Sisk was brought up from Indianapolis yesterday and rookie Hunter Barco was sent down.
Mitch Keller is scheduled to start tonight for the Pirates against Washington’s Miles Mikolas, the former St. Louis Cardinal. Keller is 1-0 with an ERA of 1.00 in three starts. Mikolas has gotten off to a rough start, going 0-3 with a 12.41 ERA. He’s given up 22 hits and 17 earned runs in 12-and-a-third innings, but 11 hits and 11 runs were in one start, against the Dodgers on April 3rd. 6:15 airtime, 6:40 first pitch on WCCS.
Pitcher Jared Jones was in the Pirates’ dugout last night and will throw a bullpen session today for the Bucs’ staff. He had elbow surgery last May and is still targeting a return to the mound for the Pirates in late May or early June.
ALTOONA
Khristian Curtis will take the mound tonight for Altoona against Portland as the Curve try to snap a franchise- record nine-game losing streak to start the season. Curtis is 0-1 with a 7.04 ERA in two starts.
