The man whose hit knocked Crosby out of the Olympics and the seven games the Penguins have played since is now suspended for five games after he took out Toronto star (and Team USA captain) Auston Matthews’ knee, ending Matthews’ season.
Anaheim defenseman Radko Gudas’s hit on Matthews caused a Grade 3 MCL tea and quad contusion on Thursday night.
Gudas was given a five-minute major penalty for kneeing and a game misconduct. Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the players’ union and the NHL, he will forfeit $104,166.65 to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
