As the winter storm and cold blast continues for our area, PennDOT is offering some winter driving safety tips.
As frigid temperatures and wind gusts continue to roll through the area this weekend, the department is reminding drivers to take their time and use caution if you have to travel. Avoiding or delaying travel during the storm is the safest choice, but if you do have to travel for any reason, people should be aware of any travel advisories and roadway restrictions. They also say keep your gas tank at least half-full, turn on your low-beams even in daylight to make yourself more visible, decrease your speed on snow-packed roads, do not use cruise control on icy or snow-covered roads, and to clear your vehicle of snow and ice before you head out.
If you see a plow truck on the road, stay at least six car lengths behind a plow truck. If you see one coming toward you, move as far away from the center of the road as possible in a safe manner. Also never drive right beside a plow truck to avoid being in their blind spots.
Drivers can check road conditions before leaving by logging on to 511pa.com, or the 511 PA App.
