An animal rights organization is seeking the removal of elephants from the Pittsburgh Zoo.
The Nonhuman Rights Project, based in Washington, D.C., filed a lawsuit yesterday in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court. The group claims that the zoo’s facilities are “grossly inadequate” for the five elephants housed there and argues that the animals should be relocated to a sanctuary or returned to the wild.
Last week, zoo officials announced plans to enhance elephant care and herd dynamics by transferring two of the elephants to their conservation center in Somerset County.
