As expected, the Pirates’ international free agent signings yesterday included two highly-rated Dominican Republic shortstops. 16-year-old Johan De Los Santos signed for $2.5 million to join his brother Yordanny in the Pirates organization. Darrell Morel is a 6-5 left-handed hitting power hitter who’s drawn comparisons to Oneil Cruz. He signed for $1.78 million.
Baseball America reports that the Pirates also signed outfielder Gabriel Rodriguez out of Venezuela, Cuban left-handed pitcher Yoslaniel Hernandez, Australian right-handed pitcher Robinson Smith, and two infielders, South Korean Hyun-Seung Lee and Ugandan Armstrong Muhoozi.
The Pirates also yesterday announced the acquisition of right-handed pitcher Brett de Geus from Toronto for cash considerations. The 27-year-old was designated for assignment last Friday. He played in 13 Major League games last year for the Marlins, Mariners, and Blue Jays, compiling a 7.15 ERA. He’s 3-4 with a 7.48 ERA in 60 career big league games.
