Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry is joining a coalition of 50 other attorneys general in a settlement with a major hotel chain concerning a widespread data breach.
The settlement with Marriott International claims that the breach happened as the company was acquiring Starwood Hotels and Resorts in 2016. The breach resulted in compromised information, including dates of birth, passport numbers and payment card information, for over 130 million guests. Marriott has agreed to pay $52 million to the states. Pennsylvania will receive $1,685,515 from the settlement. The Federal Trade Commission, which has been coordinating with the states throughout the investigation, reached a parallel settlement with the hotelier.
As part of the agreement, Marriott has agreed to strengthen and continually improve its cybersecurity practices. The terms still require court approval.
