The Public Utility Commission’s public hearings on a rate increase request by the FirstEnergy companies, including Penelec, resume this week, and move into the western half of the state. Two of those hearings will be the closest ones to Indiana County on the schedule.
FirstEnergy is asking for an annual revenue increase of more than $503 million. For Penelec customers, it would mean a 9.8 percent rate hike, raising the average monthly bill from $200.96 to $220.75. Penelec’s revenue boost would amount to almost $133 million, a 28 percent increase.
The format calls for two hearings at each site, at 1 PM and 6 PM. The first one will be Tuesday in Erie. Then on Wednesday, the hearings move to Butler County Community College. On Thursday they are at the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center. On Friday, the in-person hearings conclude in Washington County.
For those unable to attend a hearing in person, the PUC will have two telephone hearings, July 16th and 17th.
A decision on the rate increase request is due by January 1st.
