PennDOT is issuing a reminder to property owners that if planned property improvements include building or modifying a driveway connected to a state highway, a highway occupancy permit must be obtained.
The permit is required by the state highway law, as the permit legitimizes the driveway and is evidence of being in compliance with the law. Applications must be put in at least 30 days before the planned start date for work, and PennDOT also advises that the driveway permit be obtained before the building permit, which may be required by some municipalities. Once the driveway work is completed, PennDOT representatives must perform a final inspection of the property.
Permits can be obtained from the PennDOT District 10 Office by calling 724-357-2800 to set up an appointment or by logging on to PennDOT’s website.
