SOFTBALL
In their showdown with second-place Section 1 foe Knoch, Indiana clubbed the Knights, 7-0. Olivia Zimmerman homered and threw seven shutout innings, striking out 6. Maggie Cunningham had two doubles and drove in 3 runs. Indiana is now 11-3, 9-0 in Section 1. Knoch is 11-4 and 8-2 in the Section, with both losses coming by shutout to Indiana.
Trailing by a run, River Valley scored three runs in the top of the 7th to overcome Penns Manor, 6-4. Maren Dunlap and Lily Buckles each had 2 hits for the Panthers and Buckles drove in 2 runs. Buckles and Ashley Pynos each had run-scoring singles in the 7th. Sara Bollinger struck out 8 Comets batters.
Cambria Heights swept a doubleheader from Portage, 7-0 and 14-2. In the first game, Margaret Elias had 3 hits and Brea Kuntz had 2. In the second game, Ellie Bender, Meghan Wholaver, and Hallie Hayes each had 2 hits for the Highlanders and Lindsey Castel had 2 for Portage.
Marion Center suffered a rare loss, out of conference to DuBois Central Catholic, by a score of 13-2.
Purchase Line lost to Curwensville, 12-0.
BASEBALL
Indiana got the offense rolling early and they also got a stellar performance from their starting pitcher in a shutout win over Highlands. Jake Slebodnick has the story. (10-0 win.)
In the Heritage Conference, United scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th to force extra innings, then won it, 8-7 with a single run in the 11th. Cole McGinnis has two hits for the Lions in a 10-hit attack and Connor Darr drove in 2 runs. West Shamokin’s Max Long had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.
Northern Cambria shut down Purchase Line, 12-2. Reese Wagner had 2 doubles for the Colts. Jace Misko had 2 hits for the Red Dragons.
Cambria Heights and Portage split a doubleheader. The Mustangs won the first game, 9-5 on a 2-run Tony Lawrence single in the 8th, one of his 3 hits in the game. Garret Jasper had 2 hits for Heights. The Highlanders won the second game, 7-5 as Ethan Kline, Bryce Lewis, and Anthony Swander each had 2 hits. Portage’s Brady Cochran had 3 hits.
Out of conference, Conemaugh Township beat Windber 4-1 and Blacklick Valley topped Conemaugh Valley, 7-2.
