Pennsylvania saw a drastic reduction in voters in this week’s primary elections, according to state officials, and Indiana County’s number dipped slightly.
Compared to the 2020 presidential primary election, which saw 41 percent of voters cast a ballot, only 29 percent of Pennsylvania voters turned up to the polls this year. President Joe Biden received 335,000 fewer votes this year and former President Donald Trump got 265,000 fewer votes than in 2020.
In Indiana County, 4,600 votes were cast from registered Democrats this year, compared to 6,502 votes in 2020. Republican voters cast only 7,824 ballots this year, which is an 11 percent decline since the 2020 primary election.
Officials say the reason for the poor turnout is that residents are not interested or excited with their choices for the presidential election after Biden and Trump won their primaries.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 5.
