Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas met with the media for the final time this season on Friday and discussions centered around the direction of the team and if any changes could be coming to the coaching staff and roster.
Dubas took the blame for the Penguins missing the playoffs for a second straight year, saying last year’s offseason moves were made with the goal of filling gaps and getting back into the Stanley Cup playoffs, but a slow start to the year and a brutal illness in the middle of the season bogged down the Penguins’ season.
Dubas did provide some clarity on the team’s general direction heading into next season. He did not say a full rebuild is coming, but rather a “pivot,” which is what teams like the L.A. Kings or New York Islanders did.
Kris Letang could be headed towards major offseason surgery, according to Dubas, even though he played all 82 games. He is going to get a second opinion on quote, “all that ails him,” which Dubas deemed “significant.” Exact details were not provided.
