At a meeting yesterday, the State System of Higher Education Board of Governors discussed the issue of freezing tuition rates once again.
Tuition has been frozen at $7,716 for in-state students for the last six years. According to a statement from PASSHE, that effort along with cost saving initiatives and significant state funding increases have allowed more students and families to afford going to college. The board wishes to keep tuition rates the same for next year, so they are requesting $623.7 million from the state, which is an increase of $38.1 million or 6.5% over last fiscal year.
Board of Governors Chairperson Cynthia Shapira said that funding in recent years has allowed the state system to keep tuition rates the same and to continue to offer the most affordable college education available in the state.
The board of governors will set tuition rates at a meeting in July after the state budget is passed.
