Pennsylvania is set to receive over $244 million from the federal government for abandoned mine cleanup efforts.
According to a news release from U.S. Senator Bob Casey, $244,786,476 has been allocated to the state from the federal Department of the Interior and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. It is designed to create jobs in rural and energy communities while reclaiming abandoned mines and mitigating their health and environmental hazards. With this round of funding, Pennsylvania has claimed over $488 million to clean abandoned mine lands, and the state is eligible to receive over $3 billion over the next 15 years from the infrastructure law.
