With the increasing number of private and charter schools dominating high school athletics, state lawmakers are working to even the playing field for student-athletes across Pennsylvania.
Representative Scott Conklin, who serves the 77th district in Centre County, recently introduced House Bill 1983 which would amend the Public School Code of 1949, and decide the future of boundary and non-boundary schools in PIAA athletics, but it has been met with mixed results from House committee members, specifically House Committee Education Chairman Peter Schweyer, who allegedly told Conklin that he would let the bill die in committee.
Hearing this, an online petition was started by Bald Eagle Area Athletic Director Douglas Dyke, who hosted several schools, including the Marion Center girls’ basketball team, during the recent state tournament, urging Schweyer to advance the bill to the House Floor for a vote. Dyke called the competitive imbalance quote, “a contentious issue that has yet to be adequately addressed.”
