At last week’s basketball championships, an Indiana County school received some honors for a public service initiative.
The PIAA teamed up with Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) to challenge students across the state to create a 30-second public service announcement to educate their classmates on the dangers of opioid abuse. The Indiana County Technology Center was the runner-up in the competition with their PSA called “Be The Reflection”, created by lead producer Lizzy Dillon. For being named the runner-up, the school will receive $500 to upgrade their equipment. To watch the PSA, click on the viewer below.
Another Indiana County connection was honored during the PIAA ceremonies last Friday and Saturday as IUP Alum Walter J. Blucas was presented with a PIAA award of merit. “Wally” was a star quarterback in his time at IUP, leading them to the Boardwalk Bowl vs. Delaware in 1968. He then went into teaching, starting in the Karns City School District before going to the Girard School District, where he stayed for 28 years in an administrative role, eventually becoming district superintendent. He also spent 40 years on the District 10 Committee, with 32 of those years as district chairman. He also was part of the PIAA Board of Directors for 32 years, including eight as the president of the PIAA.
