The Steelers typically take four quarterbacks to training camp. They now have three on the roster after agreeing yesterday to a one-year deal with former Bills, Panthers, Commanders, and Texans quarterback Kyle Allen. The seven-year veteran who backed up Josh Allen in Buffalo last season appeared in seven games last season but didn’t throw any passes.
The Steelers also came to terms with defensive end Dean Lowry, who played the first seven years of his career with the Packers before signing last year with the Vikings. His season was cut short by a pectoral muscle injury in Minnesota’s ninth game.
Also yesterday, wide receiver Quez Watkins agreed to a one-year contract. He’s spent the last four seasons with the Eagles, and he caught 15 passes last season while dealing with hamstring issues.
Steelers GM Omar Khan said at yesterday’s NFL Meeting in Orlando that he is “surprised” and “excited” to have both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in the quarterback room. He outlined how the deals came together to acquire the two, as well as the trade of Kenny Pickett to the Eagles.
Khan also said “All options are on the table” to acquire a new center after the release of Mason Cole. He said it could be by free agency, a trade, or the draft, but the Steelers “will be patient.”
