As the Annual NFL Meeting got underway in Orlando yesterday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Russell Wilson has the “pole position” to be the starting quarterback in 2024 but Justin Fields will have the opportunity to compete for the job, “When it’s time to compete.”
Also in his media session, Tomlin said the trade of Diontae Johnson to Carolina was “a good move” because the Panthers need Johnson at wide receiver, and the Steelers needed Donte Jackson at cornerback. He said there are a lot of options to replace Johnson at wide receiver, both in the free-agent marketplace and in what he called an “unusually deep” pool of talent in the upcoming draft.
Tomlin said he’s excited about Patrick Queen, the newly signed inside linebacker, and the Steelers have “some work to do” on the offensive line, especially at center, where Mason Cole was released last month.

The League Meeting is typically where rules get tweaked. One major change being discussed is a new way to deal with kickoffs, allowing only the kicker and returner to move until the ball is fielded. Touchbacks would go to the 35-yard. The hip-drop tackle is also being debated.
The meetings wrap up on Wednesday.
