The Pirates lost to the Yankees, 1-0 in Spring Training baseball in Bradenton yesterday. Left-hander Martin Perez tuned up for his regular-season start this Friday in Miami with three scoreless innings, giving up a hit and two walks and striking out three.
David Bednar made his second appearance of the spring and gave up the lone run in the ballgame on a two-out double by former Pirate Josh VanMeter followed by a double by Jahmai Jones. The Pirates had five hits, including a double by Jared Triolo, and singles by Andrew McCutchen, Ke’Bryan Hayes, Michael A. Taylor, and Jason Delay.
The Bucs made a couple of roster moves over the weekend, optioning infielder Liover Peguero and left-handed reliever Jose Hernandez to Indianapolis. Pitcher Chase Anderson triggered an opt-out in his minor league contract after it became clear he would not make the major league roster. He’s now a free agent and can sign with any team.
The Pirates will play the final Grapefruit League game of the season today at LECOM Park in Bradenton (1:00 on WCCS). Lefty Marco Gonzalez will start against the Blue Jays. Then the team will pack up and head south to Miami, with two scheduled off days before facing the Marlins in the season opener on Thursday.
