Ray Shetler, Jr., who is charged with assaulting an officer as he was being arrested on an outstanding warrant in 2021 in Seward is asking that charges against him be dropped.
Shetler was arrested after State Police and County Sheriffs deputies tried to arrest him at a mobile home in Seward for an outstanding warrant for failure to appear at a probation revocation hearing. Officers found him hiding under a folded futon in a mobile home in Seward, and as they were taking him into custody, he allegedly head-butted a sheriff’s deputy and fought with other officers. The deputy suffered head and shoulder injuries that required medical treatment. Shetler was also injured when he was shot in the eye with a taser.
Shetler was previously on trial for fatally shooting St. Clair Township police officer Lloyd Reed, but he was acquitted on the murder charges. He was found guilty of stealing a vehicle during his escape attempt.
County assistant public defender Michael Garafalo said that Shetler’s right to a speedy trial have been violated by prosecutors. The trial is scheduled to begin October 2nd, and is due in court today for a pre-trial hearing.
