Westmoreland County Judge Meagan Bilik-DeFazio will consider a motion to quash filed by the attorneys for Kevin Murphy, the Saltsburg man who was found guilty of murdering his mother sister, and aunt in 2009 at the family glass plant located in Loyalhanna Township, outside of Saltsburg.
The motion was filed on September 5th, seeking to forbid the use of certain evidence as Murphy appeals his 2013 conviction. Now 62 years old, Murphy lost a State Supreme Court appeal in 2016 and then claimed inadequate legal defense by his original attorneys. In 2019 a new team of attorneys was appointed.
Murphy claims a handgun recovered from inside a machine at the plant was used only for shooting birds and that someone else shot the three women, whose bodies were found beside each other. Each had been shot execution-style from behind.
The prosecution argued at the trial that Murphy killed the women because they objected to his relationship with a married woman.
The judge has scheduled a hearing on the motion to quash for October 20th.
