Yesterday, Governor Josh Shapiro signed an executive order to establish a commission on how the state will use generative artificial intelligence like Chat GPT.
In a statement, Shapiro said that the governing board will be tasked with helping state agencies find ways to use AI to improve government services and establishing guidelines for its use. He also said that AI will not replace government workers and the commission will also keep cybersecurity at the top of everyone’s mind. The state is expected to partner with Carnegie Mellon University’s AI experts to get advice and contribute additional research.
While other states have banned the use of AI by government agencies, Shapiro said that Pennsylvania wants to remain ahead of the curve and “establish an innovative and practical and usable government structure” for its use.
