IUP has received a grant from the federal Department of Health and Human Services that will provide financial support for those studying to be a nurse-educator.
The $171,961 grant is administered by the Department’s Health Resources and Services Administration. The program will provide loan forgiveness of up to 85 percent of existing student loans for students in their Masters and Doctoral nursing program who commit to serving as a nurse-educator at any accredited school of nursing or a clinical educator at an accredited health facility for four years. The Nursing Loan Forgiveness program is designed to reward those who wish to help increase the number of nurses in the United States.
In a statement from the University, Professor and Doctoral Program Coordinator Dr. Kristy Chunta said that will help fill the gaps in the workforce, as nurses are desperately needed not just in Pennsylvania, but across the United States.
A total of four IUP students in the master’s, DNP, and PhD program have committed to the Nursing Loan Forgiveness Program, which provides up to $40,000 for an academic year. This marks the first year IUP will receive funding as part of this program.
