University President Dr. Michael Driscoll focused his remarks on the three IUP alumni who died in the terror attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City: William Sugra, William Moskal and Donald Jones.
Also speaking at today’s ceremonies was Michael Tyree, associate professor of plant ecology at IUP and the faculty lead for the Flight 93 National Memorial Restoration Monitoring Project. He said the idea was to reforest the fields to what they looked like from before the crash of Flight 93 and what it was before mining operations came through. He said that over the last 12 years, IUP has sent over 40 students, faculty and staff participating in the plantings every spring.
Also speaking at today’s ceremony was IUP ROTC Cadet Abigail Knapp, whose family owned part of the land that Flight 93 crashed into. She talked about how important it was not only to remember the victims, but the victims’ families as well.
The ceremony also included wreaths that were laid by members of the ROTC Honor Guard, and a performance by the IUP Wind Ensemble.
